Shinku looks confused for a moment, but it passes. "I don't really get the joke, but okay." He begins to chuckle a little, working its way into a full belly laugh, as it joins with his teacher's.

Kyoshin laughs all the harder for it, and as it starts to wind down, he sighs happily.
The moment doesn't last. With a SLAM it is too late.
"KYOUKO KYOSHIN! I should have known!" The Great Terror of the Nokemono Odoroki family has arrived, disturbed by the sounds of laughter in her quiet home.
"Eh?" Kyoshin turns, and goes white as a sheet, letting out a small meep of fear. "No-no-no-NODOKA-SAN!"
"I don't care at all why you are here, but you are keeping my son awake, and he has an important day tommorow! Get out!" Short and fierce, Nokemono Nodoka has the odd, motherly ability to cow nearly anyone around her. Her frown emanates menace and the folded arms are a promise of punishments yet to come. She stares down at Kyoshin, who only earlier today faced off several ape-like kami, and her stare is more frightening than any of them could ever hope to be.
Kyoshin quivers as he slowly moves his head up to face her. Working his mouth is an effort under that cold glare, and every syllable is a battle. "Shin. Ku. San. Is. Your. Son?"
"I just said that, Kyo-baka! Now, do I have to get angry? Our Shin-kun has to see his squad leader early tomorrow for the first time,"
"Yes, I..."
"...and you sneaking in here like you did when you were learning from Our Odoroki-san is NOT going to be tolerated!"
"Er, but..."
"Not this time!" Nodoko takes one step. Just one.
It's enough to get an injured man onto his considerably large feet. Dropping a folded piece of paper at Shinku's side before bounding out the window, Kyoshin quickly adds, in a quiet voice, "ByeShinkusan-Seeyoulater-Nicetoseeyouagain-Nodokosan!"
"You."
The full fury of the Great Terror turns to face Shinku. "Why. Are you. Awake?"

Shinku visibly recoils from his mother's wrath. "Uh, I - Uh, well... IWasBeingGoodButKyoshinSenseiCameInhereAnd and and..." Shinku's face has drained of color, "I'mSorry, GoingToSleepNow. Goodnight." The boy turns over and pretends to be fast asleep.

"Kyoshin... sensei?" Nodoka sighs, and all wrath leaves her as she tucks Shinku in. "Oh dear. Well, apologize to him for me in the morning. Here. I'll read his note for you."
Bending down and picking up the folded piece of paper, Shinku's mother reads it like she were reading a story book. "Meet at the foot of the spire, before dawn breaks and bring breakfast. No meat. If you don't wake up in time, you'll have to find us. That's just like him. It's almost as though he expected you to catch him. He probably did. That man... You be nice to him, Shin-kun. How he ever got the disgusting name of 'The Volcano', I'll never know. He's too much of a gentle giant."
Nodoka smiles quietly to herself as she shuts the door, her words full of love and mirth, "And it's such fun scaring him."
"Now. GO TO SLEEP." The door shuts with a shuddering final clack, and the house is quiet once more.

Shinku tries to get to sleep, being sure that he wants to wake up plenty early to bring his breakfast in the morning.

Nakashiman bows eyes not showing. "I'm sorry sir. I passed and have even gone a my first mission." His usual air of strength and confidence completely gone as he stands motionless where he was when his adopted father issued his question.

"Good. Good ta hear. Really, I already knew. Genki-sama came by. Said he was your sensei for the day, but your real sensei'd wanted him to deliver a note." At this, the old man smiled.
"I read it. You better get some sleep, you've gotta be at the foot of the spire before dawn. Pack your breakfast before you sleep. Don't put meat into it. Dunno why not. Meat's good for ya. But it was in the note, so you'd better do it."
With that, Nakashima watches as the man he calls father leans back and begins to fiddle with a kunai knife and a block of wood, whittling something.

Nakashima runs off to pack his lunch. He makes whatever he can out of what there is. He makes sure not to pack any meat. When he his done he returns to his father. "If there is nothing else you wish of me tonight, I am going to bed. Good night, sir". With that he waits for a response and goes to bed.

The next morning, the three of you wake promptly, by various means.
Standing over Nakashima's head is his father, just staring at him. When Nakashima's eyes finally open, the older man says, "Bout time you woke. You need to get to the Spire, double time. Do your best. Don't forget your breakfast."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Kenma-san? Oh Kenam-san? You need to wake." The kindly voice of Kenma's landlady comes through the door, followed by a light tapping on his doorframe. "I received a message from your instructor that you need to get to the Spire. I've made your breakfast... though I was asked to leave out the bacon and any other meat this morning. Rather odd request, but if it's for training..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Shin-shin. You need to get up." Nokemono Odoroki, Shinku's father, wanders into the room. "Kyo-kun doesn't like people who are late. His teacher was always late, and it annoyed him to no end. Not that he'd ever say anything to me about it. Your mother made your breakfast. It's rather elaborate, and a bit more than you normally eat. So I had a bite or four from it."

Kenma frowns: "No bacon? Ugh... what kind of instructor leaves out the bacon... oh well..." Kenma eats in a bit of a hurry (finishing his meal with some time to spare hopefully), gets dressed and arms himself, and then heads to the spire to ponder whether the reason for no meat will be explained while waiting for his new instructor.

"What are you doing, Kenma-san? There's no time to eat now! Take it with you. Hurry!" Kind, yet forceful, the landlady sees Kenma out the door and to the Spire. Oddly, he's the first one there.

Shinku panics for a moment, thinking he overslept. "Spire? I gotta go!" Shinku bolts out of bed, barely noticing his father as he starts getting ready. He then stops, slowly turns to the man, and bows. "Good morning, father. I will be off, to do my best. I will return later." He quickly finishes getting ready, grabs his food, and runs out the door, stuffing the last of his equipment into his side-pouch as he goes.

Nakashima does just as his father says and hurries to get ready. As soon as he is finished, he bows to his father, "Good day father. I will make you proud." With that, he grabs his breakfast and bolts out the door to the spire.

Kenma feels the presence of first Shinku, and then Nakashima as all three of you meet at the foot of the spire. It is so early, that several of the spirit lights are still lit, and it is difficult to see under normal conditions.
(OOC: Conversation follows, if you wish, but I need spot/listen checks from everyone)
