Appearance: Hsiao is bizarre... even by Illithid standards. Standing just around six feet tall and weighing around 160 lbs., the first thing to notice is that, unlike regular Illithids, Hsiao is extremely muscled and hardened. Powerful muscle under hardened skin in a frame that shows extremely high agility and moves with catlike grace; which, again unlike regular Illithids, is not hidden by a robe or cloak (only occasionally does he shroud himself in his cloak, usually while in public areas). He has long since ridden himself of the need for the moisturizing mucus-layer of other Illithids, using symbiotic attachments and grafts, as well as his incredibly hardened mauve skin which now has a texture similar to coral. Hsiao wears a breastplate of hardened material that extends across the majority of his body providing coverage comparable to full plate. Boots, bracers, greaves, all made of the same material extended from the breastplate cover his form up to his neck and elbows. The parts not guarded by this chitinous armor have recently begun growing purple scales as well, rendering his skin bare skin almost even more resilient than the armor he wears and wicked dark-purple nails and teeth have replaced the normally harmless ones found on other Illithids. The disturbing feature is the way the breastplate pulses and shifts... occasionally twitching and the gaps between interlocking plates pulsing with muscle that seems to be merged into Hsiao's skin. On his right forearm a lengthy coiling whip of sinewy muscle-like material is wrapped or hanging lazily, but like a cat's tail it moves and swishes on its own as though sentient. On the back of his left hand a small scarab jewelry-decoration of bronze lies near the wrist... until bluish oily wings flicker slightly as the creature stirs, clearly alive.
Riddled with symbionts, Hsiao's body barely sports inorganic material anywhere, only two rings, an amulet, his cloak, and a few satchels stand out as inorganic. Of course, his most bizarre feature are the two vibrant eyes instead of the usual milky white mindflayer ones. His left eye is a vibrant red while his left is a light blue. Then, though it is usually closed, a third eye sits vertically above and between those two, slightly largely and silver-colored. A tattoo on his back left shoulder that surges with a dark fire every so often. Lastly, every so often when he moves, a shadow lags behind, a living creature made of insubstantial darkness bonded to his form.
Truly, Hsiao is terrifying to behold, as far from an Illithid as one can be while still being truly called one, he would more closely resemble a Daelkyr than his own kind were it not for the four tentacles around the equally strange mouth.
