Appearance: Mathias is both an imposing and charismatic man. He possesses smooth features and appears to almost always wear a slight smile on his pale-skinned face. Long black hair falls to his shoulders and he always dresses himself in luxurious clothing that befits his position as the only living noble of the Cronqvist family, yet underneath the layer of nobility his mithril armor glimmers and protects him. Such is his trade that Mathias will generally even carry his hammer with him despite trying to maintain a 'noble' image. So for the most part Mathias' muscular frame appears even more bulky with clothes of nobility draped over mithral full plate. Mathias gives off an air of comfort and compassion, yet a dark rage seems to be barely contained and when battle begins he transforms from an elegant noble into a hammer-wielding champion of the light, uttering holy litanies against evil and intoning the condemnation of evil.
History: Mathias is the only son of a baron, one whom he'd care not to remember. The Cronqvist family has been practically cursed since their founding as each and every family member has had some sort of tragedy befall them at some point in their lives. Mathias was no exception as a mere few days after he was born, his mother passed away mysteriously and left his father, the Baron Cronqvist, a miserable and bitter man. Mathias was raised to be a 'ideal' nobleman and be in charge of his familial estate. The traumatized boy unfortunately had no say in the matter and was so raised to be an emotionless and perfect-groomed noble heir to the Cronqvist estate. At the age of 16, Mathias finally received a shocking enough blow that it shook him out of his catatonic state of 'ideal nobility'. That was, his father had arranged a wedding for him with the sole purpose being to secure a larger estate and further wealth. Mathias, having never met the girl and having no feelings for her, was extremely reluctant to commit his entire life to her. He fled his estate, deciding that he'd live on his own and escape from all the problems of his nobility and his terribly bitter father who blamed his son for the death of his wife.
He lived a year or so as a rogue without any morals or values, stealing from day to day simply to survive. It was not until he had a run-in with the law that he finally decided to make something better of himself. He turned himself over to the law of the city he'd been living as a thief in and did not attempt to escape or even plead his innocence. Instead, he merely asked that he be given a chance to prove his change of heart. The city was intrigued and set him to work for an elder gentleman, a paladin who had long since retired from his adventuring career, hoping the old man's good would wear off on the youth. Their hopes were overwhelmingly satisfied as Mathias became a paladin in his own right practically overnight. Even the elder gentleman had scarcely seen someone so quickly take to the ways of a paladin as Mathias had and he did his best to try and teach the young man. Several years passed and Mathias had become a prominent figure as a protector of the innocent and a champion of the light. It was some time before Mathias finally decided that he had a darkness in his past he must confront in order to fully embrace his paladin mantle, he must confront Baron Cronqvist, his father.
Returning to the estate after nearly 10 years, Mathias approached the old nobleman in his shining armor and apologized for having fled as well as explaining why he did so. The count was not pleased to see his wayward son return after so long and seemingly having done well in life. He told him that he had instead killed a servant, passed him off as Mathias, and gotten a good deal of "pity" from the other nobles to help secure his position. Mathias was horrified that his father could stoop to such lows just to maintain his wealth and position. With a heavy heart he informed his father that he would have to be arrested for such a crime. His father tried to attack him, making wild claims that he had no son and similar such things. Mathias was more than a match for his aged father and quickly subdued him, bringing him to the courts so that justice would take its course.
Mathias took it upon himself to investigate the nobles his father had associated with as a part of claiming his heritage as his own (the Cronqvist Estate). However, the discoveries were alarming, many of the nobles were actually evil creatures of darkness that had long since been clawing their way into society's upper reaches. Mathias took it upon himself to purge the evil from the nobility and began studying and researching his foes. His first target, a vampire merchant who'd been selling slaves, was where he encountered a man who would later become a steadfast friend and ally. Leon Dragos Belmont, he'd introduced himself as, and Mathias found that whereas his Paladin code kept him lawful, Leon was far from it, instead embracing an almost vigilante lifestyle to hunt evil and laws be damned. Leon and Mathias formed a deadly team that was highly capable and within months they'd tracked down and either executed or brought to justice all of the corrupt nobility. For a time they parted ways, Mathias joining the Order of Illumination as his views became more extreme towards the persecution of evil, Leon vanishing once more as was his tendency.
Several years passed with Mathias honing his stealth, strategy, might, and faith, even learning the ability to fake being controlled mentally to further close the gap between himself and his foes before they were aware. He had been trained in the ways of the Shadowbane Inquisitor and earned the alias "Lighthammer" over his years of service for his favored choice of weapon being a two-handed adamantine maul. It was over the years of hunting evil that Mathias ran into Leon several times and indeed the two men have become somewhat of a natural team accustomed to fighting together (despite the displeasure of Mathias' superiors for letting the 'loose cannon'-Leon run free and not trying to bring him under the wing of the Order). It was no surprise to Mathias when he arrived in Rouen to find his longtime friend Leon already present. Mathias smiled at the thought of working with his longtime friend and made ready to unravel the mystery and purge the evil of Einnashe Castle in the name of God.
