Appearance: This strange thing standing before you is a bit over six feet in height, and is quite unusual in appearance. Its skin is a deep, dark violet in color, appearing almost black in hue. The upper body of this creature is much like a man, but the head and lower body vary quite a bit. The legs of this creature are muscular, and end in goat hooves (reminiscent to some, I'm sure, of some foul creature of the abyss). On its head are two small vestigial horns, only a few inches long. The man (as it must be called at this point) also has the sharp teeth of a carnivore, again reminding the viewer of a hunter, a predator. Once the viewer's attention has worn off of these obviously visible signs of race, the less obvious ones appear to one's gaze. For instance, the viewer now notices that this man's hands have only four digits, three fingers and a thumb. In addition, peeking out from behind the creature's back is a small, low-hanging tail tipped with a sharply curved barb.
This person has, of course, distinctive features other than those of race. His silver-white hair has been cropped relatively short, being only a couple of inches long, and remaining quite stiff, even with movement. His skin also appears to have been subjected to many knives over the years, with what appears to be old battle wounds made into a decorative pattern with ritual scars to join them. The man is dressed in dark colored clothing, with two daggers very clearly displayed on his arms, in sheaths. An ancient-looking elven hand hangs from a woven band around his neck, and a belt of pouches is carefully strapped around his waist. It appears as though nothing about this man is careless or accidental, in fact.
History: Growing up an orphan in the great city of Asharis, Devin was a lonely child. He had no friends; in fact, he was feared and hated, as a child of The Pit. He knew nothing of his parentage, or if he was, indeed, the child of some great creature of evil. To survive on the streets, Devin had to become strong. He trained his mind and body until he had nothing to fear from the other urchins in the gutter. In fact, he began to develop a reputation in the seedier side of the city as a creature to be feared and avoided, rather than being
picked on, as he had been for so long. It wasn't long before an arcanist of some might heard these rumors of a demon-child and went to investigate. He found young Devin and offered him training in the ways of arcane power. The boy jumped at this opportunity to rise from his squalor, and immediately his training began. It didn't take the young man long to realize that this 'great' mage was barely a pretender at real knowledge, and that the only thing he could learn was how to control what power he already had. Of course, things are never that simple. During this training in the mystical ways of the warlock, Devin discovered another ability - one that his trainer could not match: he discovered that he could become insubstantial.
With that power found, Devin's master decided to turn on his young student. Fearing this, the demonic-looking being fled from his teacher. In fact, he fled for a long time, trying to lose his past, and everything it held with it. For several years, Devin just did what he could to get by in the great city. However, when the new church came and demanded obedience, he was curious. Once he learned about this 'Greater Good,' the warlock saw that he could make much use out of these teachings. He joined the church, and was assigned the gray caste until he proved himself to the hierarchy. Seeing the opportunity for advancement, he immediately set out to train himself. It took quite a lot of time, but Devin, or Reth'vre as he would become known, finally proved himself an able warrior and was promoted to the Dark Caste, as befit his unique capabilities. As a professional in the Dark Caste, he was free to hunt down his old master and turn his hand into a gruesome trophy (who, as it turns out, was not smart enough to join the church). That satisfaction, combined with all that Aun'el has given him, has made Mal'noctis, the Night Terror, very loyal to the church and its leaders. He is now a recognized hero to the cause, even if he has not risen as far in the hierarchy as he would like. Reth'noctis is always looking for the hit that will get him that next promotion...
