Noticed this ( www.rpgamer.com/news/Q2-2009/042309a.html) while browsing through RPGamer today; Eidos (the guys who made Tomb Raider, Hitman, Deus Ex, and others), was just aquired by Square-Enix (the guys who made, well... you know). Also, they released how many units of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games (a combined total, though I'm not sure if they include offshoots like Crystal Chronicles). ... I'm not sure what to think about this. The SE boys are damn good at pushing products, which should help boost the sales of the Eidos games, but, apparantly, they're also the devil. This also gives them control over some more lucrative properties such as Hitman and Tomb Raider (unfortunately, Deus Ex's ship has already sailed; a pity, since SE could've actually made the sequel much better). Thoughts?

Oh, and completely unrelated, FFIV's getting a sequel. With Kain as a villain, apparantly.

I'm worried about quality as they start putting out so many titles. I used to buy everything Squaresoft released for SNES/PS1, but anymore the games havn't been as good.

I wonder if you're referring to Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, a game I've heard (Note: I heard this from one of those import-o-philes, seriously, I've never seen the draw in that) is a decent enough story if you're looking for more in the Final Fantasy IV universe.
Regarding your main point, I'm not honestly sure why SE would do it. A lot of the series Eidos puts out are either unavailable or are well past their prime. This would be like me doing a corporate take-over of Max's Castlevania inspired game as opposed to just creating a new one myself. I mean, what is Squenix gonna do? Make Lara Croft an elf or some other form of mystical creature? It's not going to resoundingly sell the games all of a sudden because Miss Croft should die for real already. ...admittedly a Viera Lara Croft would be worth a look. Are they going to make a sequel to Daikatana? God I hope not.
All the same, I don't see this as a wise tactical move, it's not like they acquired any heavyhitter names of game series or the like. It seems like a silly purchase to bulk out their staff and wind up diluting more Final Fantasy games with less core gameplay elements and more making it look pretty thanks to hundreds of additional slave hours.
Don't get me wrong, I like pretty games and FFXII is downright gorgeous for being on the PS2; but at the same time SE why the fuck can't our characters have distinct roles and purposes anymore? No, I don't count 11 because an MMO that doesn't let you change jobs on the same character is just extorting money from you, and I don't count 9 because it abused character roles so hard that you can change any character's name to their job class (Vivi = Blackmage, Freya = Dragoon, etc.) and the dialogue gets better... or at the very least less pretentious.
Still, this is one of those only-time-will-tell things in my book because whether this is SE throwing money around or making a wise business move is a mystery to me, it honestly seems like the former, but what do I know about major corporation decisions?

Actually... this might be good for Eidos.
I'm looking at information about Taito, the other group now part of the SE holdings. They were pretty much out of business from 1999 to 2005, not making any games whatsoever. Since SE acquired them, their business has been picking up.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. I was a total Square nut in the 1990s (for good reason, their games rocked), but this decade has been pretty weak.
